Jean Stoffer is celebrated for skillfully merging classic elements with modern practicality, crafting spaces that are both timeless and contemporary. She first gained national attention with her distinctive and enduring kitchen designs, and her expertise now extends to elegant and accessible designs throughout the entire home.
Jean's design work is marked by meticulous attention to detail, a respect for classic architecture, and a sincere interest in her clients' needs and lifestyles. Her firm, Jean Stoffer Design, located in East Grand Rapids, Michigan, has earned numerous design awards and is frequently featured in magazines.
Opened in 2018, you may wish to visit Jean's retail store called Stoffer Home also in East Grand Rapids featuring decor, linens and more. Soon after she launched Stoffer Home Cabinetry, the line reflecting her signature look and passion for English-inspired kitchens. Jean also gained recognition through her television show, “The Established Home,” on the Magnolia Network, which highlighted her design projects and family interactions, as well as the book she authored about her journey to becoming a designer, Establishing Home.
Currently, Jean and her design partner, daughter Grace Start, share their stunning designs on their YouTube channel, Stoffer Home Design. Her son, John Stoffer, handles photography and marketing. Her other children and husband are also involved in various aspects of the business.

Jean's kitchen designs are renowned for several unique qualities, including:
1 - Timeless Kitchens Are British Inspired
Heavy influence especially by British kitchen aesthetics, featuring rich colors and patterns, but design remains simple and elegant. Jean and grace often incorporate deep greens, burgundies, ochre, and blues in their tile work as well as differing tile-setting patterns. A nature-inspired, patterend cafe curtain or linen-covered dining chair provides warmth. Vintage rugs and runners are also a favorite. Wallpaper is also a favorite in smaller, adjoining rooms, halls or baths adding rich interest.
2 - Timeless Kitchens Use Mixed Materials
Designs often feature a distinctive combination of materials, textures, finishes, and colors, creating visually interesting and harmonious spaces.
Lighting and hardware are mixed with multiple finishes and period sytle as well as traditional, classic and modern design. Jean's favorite faucet finish happens to be polished nickel, but she's not afraid to select unlacquered brass, bronze or matte black elements to complement the final look.
Flooring includes both tile and wood which can vary from room to room. This is dfferent from the usual design scheme to stick with all wood flooring.

Flush Inset Cabinetry: A hallmark of Stoffer kitchens is the use of flush inset cabinetry, where doors and drawers are inset into the cabinet frame. This historical home detail adds a refined, high-quality look.
Wood & Paint Cabinetry Finishes: Often, perimeter kitchen cabinetry is of different wood material or paint color than that of the kitchen island which adds interest and a focal point.
Paneled Large Appliances: Refrigerators, freezers and dishwashers are paneled in the same finish as the cabinetry for a seamless look. This may also be carried over to the range hood.
4 - Timeless Kitchen Elements Appreciate Daily Living And Entertaining
Scullery & Butler's Pantry Combo: This thoughtful area acts as a hidden back kitchen for food preparation, plating meals, messy cooking, and washing pots and dishes. Features include additional countertops, dish and glassware display, secondary sinks and refrigerators, dishwashers, extra ranges or ovens, and easy-to-clean surfaces. Often it may include a coffee or wet bar dependent on
Coffee & Wet Bars: Jean is always looking to carve out a separate space for a pretty, but functional coffee or wet bar to meet her clients' daily living and entertaining needs. Basics include inset cabinetry with lower storage, upper shelving to accomodate mugs or barware, a small sink, darker countertops that hold up to spills and frequent use and a panel-covered beverage cooler to hold creams and refreshments.
Oven Range Alcoves & Hoods: Very unique to Jean's design is a dedicated space for countertop prep, storage and large oven or cooktop. According to Jean, the perfect countertop length for each side of the oven/cooktop area is at least 2 feet. Almost always incorporated is open shelving above this area, often in tile or the crafted from the countertop material. On each side of the alcove ar carved out niches to hold oils, spices and other cooking needs. To top it off, a range hood is added which serves for venting function, but is often crafted to be a design focal point. Jean loves both wood and metal finishes for hoods.
Kitchen Island & Unique Sink Ideas: Jean's kitchen island design often includes a large inset sink which may include 2 faucets to accomodate 2 people in the area. Rather than using a farmhouse style sink, Jean's well-copied design idea is to rather craft a rectangle panel out of the same countertop material that is placed vertically right under the sink. It appears as a farmhouse sink, but is much more elegant and adds a "splash-guard" for a high water-use area. If there is enough space, dishwasher(s) may be added in the island.

Jean's approach respects the classic architecture of a home while incorporating modern elements, resulting in kitchens that feel cohesive with the overall house design. Often, she may add back in an earlier architectural feature that might have been covered or lost over the years.
